TGA Regulatory Status of SARMs

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulates substances in Australia primarily based on whether they are intended for therapeutic use in humans. Research chemicals supplied for in vitro or animal research — not for human therapeutic use — are generally outside the therapeutic goods framework.

However, the TGA's Poisons Standard (SUSMP) schedules specific substances for possession and supply restrictions regardless of therapeutic intent. The critical question for each SARM is whether it appears in any SUSMP schedule.

SUSMP Scheduling Analysis

As of April 2026, most research SARMs are not specifically listed in any schedule of the SUSMP. They do not appear as Schedule 4 (Prescription Only), Schedule 8 (Controlled Drug), or other restrictive schedules.

Important nuance: Some SUSMP entries use class-based language (e.g., "preparations containing [substance class]") that may or may not encompass specific SARMs depending on how the TGA interprets the class definition. Researchers should verify current status via the TGA SUSMP online tool for each specific compound.

Unscheduled status means: not a controlled substance under the Poisons Standard. This is not the same as being approved for therapeutic use — SARMs remain unapproved for therapeutic use regardless of scheduling status.

Research Importation Framework

Australian researchers can import unscheduled research chemicals for legitimate scientific purposes:

  • ABF customs declaration: Products must be accurately declared as "research chemicals" or "scientific research materials" — not as medicines, dietary supplements, or human use products
  • Quantity: Research-scale quantities (small vials, mg amounts) are assessed differently from commercial-scale imports
  • Institutional researchers: Affiliated with universities, hospitals, or research institutions should work through their institution's research/procurement office and may have established import frameworks
  • Documentation: Third-party certificate of analysis (CoA), product identity confirmation, and For Research Use Only labelling are important supporting documentation for customs

WADA & Sport Integrity Australia

Separate from general legal status, all SARMs are prohibited in sport under WADA's Prohibited List (S1 — Anabolic Agents). MK-677 is prohibited under S2 (Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors).

Sport Integrity Australia enforces the WADA Prohibited List for Australian athletes. Use of any SARM by an athlete subject to anti-doping rules is prohibited regardless of the compound's general legal status as a research chemical.

Rainbow Peptide does not supply products for athletic performance enhancement. All products are For Research Use Only.
